The Steering Committee is the governing body of SEL4CA.

Tisha Marina Bernard – Coordinating Consultant and Chair of Action Committee

For many years a conflict-resolution trainer and bully-prevention specialist for K-12 schools and an SEL-implementation consultant to school administrators, Tisha recently joined the Alliance in order to promote more rapid school adoption of programs and practices she has seen work close up and about which she is seriously passionate.

Crystal Chavez – Chair of Outreach Committee and Speaking Bureau

Crystal is a mother, educator/teacher, children’s yoga instructor, and entrepreneur. Passionate about SEL as well as health and wellness physically, emotionally, and spiritually, she seeks to empower individuals, school communities and business owners to take charge of their own well being and happiness through success coaching and mindfulness.

Andrew Cheeseman – Chair of Website & Social Media Committee; Founder of Team(You), Inc.

Andrew founded and recently sold Team(You), a for-profit social-emotional learning based digital classroom tool that reshapes school culture at both the classroom level and the school and district levels. He currently drives growth and innovation as a business leader for his business clients.

Wade Clement – Chair of Athlete and Sports Committee; Program Manager of the Prime Time Games in Los Angeles

Wade Clement believes in the power of athletics to change people’s lives and to unite
communities. He was on the Men’s Varsity Soccer team at Duke University, from which
he graduated in 2016.

Krisan Crow

Krisan has more than 20 years experience as a Project Manager for a wide array of educational environments. As the Director of the TRIO college-access high school and adult programs, she focused on removing barriers to higher education.

Judy Julin – Chair of Events Committee; CEO of WOW Learning Lab and Inspired Parenting Magazine

A pioneer in developing schools, community learning centers, programs and activities that cultivate the integral connection between intellectual development, social and emotional growth, physical health and spiritual awareness. Judy has been active in youth empowerment, educational innovation and children’s wellness programming since 1982 and has been featured for her ground-breaking initiatives in the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, The London Times, on CBS and in various documentaries. Holds a degree in Sociology from Denison University.

Lara Kain – Education Consultant

A former classroom teacher, Lara currently consults directly with schools and districts to build trauma-informed and resilience-oriented schools.

Jay Levin – Steering Committee Chair and Chair of Media/Promotion Committee; President of The Big EQ Campaign

The goal of the nonprofit The Big EQ Campaign is to mobilize the public via marketing/advertising and grassroots organization to raise the emotional intelligence of all children by requiring Social-Emotional Learning in all schools.  Jay also is the founder and former CEO of the LA Weekly newspaper.

Jon Oliver – Executive Director, Lesson One

Jon has run an SEL training firm for some years and is experienced in statewide SEL Alliance actions and advocacy  based on extensive volunteer engagement before he moved to California with the SEL Alliance of Massachusetts, a forerunner of, and mentor to, our similar California Alliance of organizations and individuals passionate about furthering comprehensive SEL implementation our state.

Susan Ward Roncalli – Co-Chair of Policy and Advocacy Committee;
LAUSD Social Emotional Learning Facilitator

An SEL expert and Fellow with Transforming Education!, Susan is a  also a member of  the official state advisory committee that drafted guidelines for SEL implementation in California.

Meredith Sommers – Client Partner, Franklin Covey Education

Meredith is a client partner for Franklin Covey’s The Leader in Me, a transforming school operating process that empowers students and staff to unleash their unique talents and gifts within the school. She is a business consultant, inspirational writer, dynamic speaker, and a serial entrepreneur who has successfully built and sold several businesses in Los Angeles.

Steven J Thompson – Chair of Education Committee; Education Consultant

Until recently Steve was principal of an online school focused on home-schooled students. An expert in SEL adoption , he is currently consulting to other educators and exploring starting an SEL-prioritizing school.   

Amy Walker – Chair of Providers Committee; West Coast representative of Committee for Children

Gifted as a messenger of SEL’s benefits, Amy has succeeded in convincing scores of schools and schools districts to include SEL in the curriculum.
