WELCOME TO THE MOST IMPORTANT SCHOOL REFORM AND YOUTH ADVANCEMENT MOVEMENT IN CALIFORNIA!

What is SEL?
SEL in the News
Current Advocacy

We are a group of people who work for schools, community organizations, associations and businesses and who care deeply about introducing social-emotional learning (SEL) into our schools and communities as the fundamental game-changer for academic learning and school cultures.  Comprehensive social-emotional learning that embraces staff as well as students dramatically improves the life skills and prospects of all children and notably reduces violence, inequity, racism, crime, suicides and addictions in our schools and society.

Until the Alliance was formed in the summer of 2017, California had no statewide volunteer organization that brought together practitioners of and advocates for social-emotional learning  (notably both individuals and many member nonprofit and for-profit enterprises) to work together solely to promote the comprehensive implementation of SEL programs and practices.

Our goal is to enlarge the pie of resources provided by the state and by local school districts so that comprehensive SEL is adopted rapidly in all state schools, pre-K to 12, and not merely the estimated 10%-15% that now benefit from this crucial learning. We also seek to influence and assist decision-makers in making SEL part of our lives by expanding its adoption in after-school programs and relevant community youth programs, as well as provide resources for parents to adopt SEL practices in their homes.

SEL in Action

By advancing the teaching and practice of SEL skills in our schools, we will:

  • Increase academic achievement (up 11% universally and 17% for at-risk students).
  • Reduce the staggering human and financial costs caused by violence, addiction and other social maladies (and for every one dollar invested in effective SEL, the return is $11).
